Nina Garsoïan Death – Nina G. Garsoïan, a renowned French-born American historian specializing in Armenian and Byzantine history has died. Nina Garsoïan passed away on Sunday, the 14th of August 2022 in New York. She was 99 years old. The cause of Nina Garsoïan’s death has not been released. She was the first female historian to get tenure at Columbia University.
“Renowned Armenian historian Nina Garsoïan passed away at her home in NYC today (August 14, 2022) at the age of 99. She was a brilliant and erudite scholar, as well as a lovely person. I took classes with her at Columbia in the late ’80s,” according to Nancy Kricorian’s statement on Twitter.
Nina Garsoïan Early Life
Nina Garsoïan was born in Paris on April 11, 1923, to Russian Armenian parents from Nakhichevan-on-Don (Rostov-on-Don) and Tbilisi. In 1933, she relocated to New York. Garsoïan earned a BA in Classical Archaeology from Bryn Mawr College in 1943 and an MA and Ph.D. in Byzantine, Near Eastern, and Armenian History from Columbia University. She was awarded a Fulbright Fellowship to study at San Lazzaro Degli Armeni, a Mekhitarist monastery in Venice.
Nina Garsoïan Career
Garsoïan started teaching at Smith College in 1956 and Columbia University in 1962. She was the first female professor to be given tenure at Columbia’s Department of History in 1969. Garsoïan was the first female dean of Princeton University’s Graduate School when she was appointed in 1977. She held the role until 1979.
Garsoïan earned the inaugural Gevork M. Avedissian Chair in Armenian History and Civilization at Columbia University in 1979. She retired as Professor Emerita of Armenian History and Civilization in 1993. Garsoïan was the director of the Revue des Études Arméniennes in Paris and a member of the Medieval Academy of America and the British Academy. She was a co-director of the Byzantine Studies Symposium at Dumbarton Oaks twice.
