Dear Friends, Fans, Colleagues, World,

I regret to inform you that the great light in the firmament no longer shines for us as it has for so many years.

Last night, my mother, Nichelle Nichols, succumbed to natural causes and passed away. Her light, however, like the ancient galaxies now being seen for the first time, will remain for us and future generations to enjoy, learn from, and draw inspiration from.

Hers was a life well lived and as such a model for us all.

I, and the rest of our family, would appreciate your patience and forbearance as we grieve her loss until we can recover sufficiently to speak further. Her services will be for family members and the closest of her friends and we request that her and our privacy be respected.

Live Long and Prosper,

Kyle Johnson

During her time on Star Trek, Nichols was one of the first black women to appear on a major television show. For the first time, she had a big supporting part in the capacity of bridge officer. A chat with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. changed Nichols’ opinion about staying in the show after the first year because she wanted to pursue a career on Broadway. King reportedly pushed her to continue working on the show, assuring her that he was a huge fan of the franchise. For the sake of black children and women across the country and other youngsters who would see black people seem as equals, he said she “could not give up.” He compared her work on the series to the continuing Civil Rights movement’s marches.
