Michael Snow CC RCA is a Canadian artist who was born on December 10, 1928 and works in a variety of mediums, including video, installation, sculpture, photography, and music. He was awarded the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts. Wavelength (1967) and La Région Centrale (1971) are two of his most well-known works, with the former being considered a watershed moment in the history of avant-garde film.
Michael Snow was educated at Upper Canada College and the Ontario College of Art after he was born in Toronto, where he also attended school. In 1957, he held his first exhibition of his own work. At the beginning of the 1960s, Snow relocated to New York City with his wife, the artist Joyce Wieland. The couple resided in the city for close to ten years. This shift resulted in a flowering of creative ideas and connections for Snow, and his work garnered increased prominence as a result. “an established personality, multiply described as a visual artist, a filmmaker, and a musician,” he came back to Canada in the early 1970s after having spent time elsewhere.
Exhibits of his art have been held in a variety of locations, including Europe, North America, and South America. Both the Centre Pompidou in Paris in the year 2000 and the Museum of Modern Art in New York in the year 2005 celebrated their reopenings with exhibitions that featured works by Snows.
