Those that knew us knew that Melissa did the talking for both of us, which was for the better she always seemed to know what to say. The love prayers and support from the community, friends, and family has been amazing and is greatly appreciated during these hard times and show just how much love she put out into the world. Mohr Funeral Home in Ponca is assisting with arrangements. Melissa Mae Clarkson, 38, of Ponca, Nebraska, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 10, 2023, at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha. Memorial services will be 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 21, at the Ponca State Park Resource and Education Center, with Father Andy Sohm officiating. Visitation will be 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. that day, also at the state park, with lunch served during that time.

Who Was Melissa Clarkson?

Melissa was born on Aug. 6, 1984, in Sioux City, Iowa, to Ralph “Don” Jr. and Lauri (Beldin) Surber. She graduated from Laurel-Concord High School in 2003 and Le Mars Beauty College. Melissa married Lee Clarkson on Oct. 4, 2008, in Dixon, Nebraska, and the couple had two beautiful children, Eli and Covey. She worked at Classic Cuts, Cost Cutters, and Salon Volume in Sioux City, Iowa, before becoming a full-time mother. Melissa loved her family, especially her children, and cherished all the gatherings and time spent with them.

She liked to cook and entertain everyone. She also enjoyed “glamping” and spending time at the lake. Those left to honor her memory include her husband, Lee Clarkson of Ponca; children, Eli and Covey; mother and stepfather, Lauri and Jeff Langley of McCook Lake, South Dakota; father and stepmother, Don and Patti Surber of Belden, Nebraska; brothers, Ryan Surber of Wayne, Nebraska, Bennie Surber of Sergeant Bluff, Iowa, and Brent Surber of Hartley, Iowa; and many other family members and friends. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the family.

Even though I didn’t know Ms. Clarkson, I worked with her brother, Bennie, for many years and know of her other immediate family members who have been in the 185th Air Refueling Wing. I would guess that Ms. Clarkson was a very good person like the Surbers I know. I mourn her loss to her family and know that she will continue to be in their thoughts and prayers always.
