Garth McGillewie Death – Longtime businessman and owner of famous Applied Machinery Sales (AMS) – A construction equipment supplier – in Rock Hill, South Carolina has tragically passed away. Garth McGillewie died from suicide following an alleged lawsuit. Garth McGillewie started the well-known Applied Machinery Sales many years ago with the experience he gathered from his father who was famous for the importation of construction equipment into the U.S. from Europe.
McGillewie was also the first renter and dealer of the Italian-made Merlo telehandlers, thus the name “AMS-Merlo”. The deadly incident occurred after the beloved respected man battled depression and anxieties following an alleged lawsuit. At the time of this publication, details of what type of lawsuit McGillewie was facing before his tragic death remains unknown. McGillewie owned the business place which was located in the area of 1205 Galleria Blvd, Rock Hill, SC.
In early 2021, in an interview with appliedmach.com, when asked what he will be looking forward to for the new year, McGillewie said, “I think 2021 will be what 2020 was supposed to have been for us, “2020 was going to be the most successful year since we’ve taken on the Merlo line, and a year of growth, as well.”
According to information on McGillewie’s LinkedIn profile, McGillewie started the importation of the Italian-made Merlo telehandlers into the U.S. in 2011. McGillewie has been involved in the construction and rental industry for almost 25 years, ever since his father began importing European construction equipment to the United States. Exports from the family firm reached as far as China and Australia. However, McGillewie had to change directions after the sale of the company in 2008.
Manulife has been bringing Merlo into Canada for quite some time, but this is the first time the telehandlers have been sold in the United States. The president of AMS, Garth McGillewie, has stated, “We are making a precise effort coming into this market.” All maintenance, supplies, and education will be provided within the United States. Currently, AMS imports 11 models approved for sale in the United States, with plans to add more as they become approved.
AMS provides front-loading and rotational telehandlers with capacities ranging from 5,500 to 26,000 pounds. “The roto telahandlers are going to be a great success in the U.S.,” McGillewie predicted to Access, Lift & Handlers. We promise that more stock is on the way. AMS hopes to capitalize on the expanding U.S. market by expanding beyond its current focus on the Southeast, where demand for its products and services is already well-satisfied.
