Who was Danny Kalb?
Danny Kalb is a well-known blues guitarist and vocalist from the United States. He was born on September 9, 1942, in Mount Vernon, New York. In the 1960s, he was a founding member of the group known as the Blues Project. After being mentored by Dave Van Ronk, Kalb went on to have a career as a solo performer and as a session musician, playing alongside renowned folk singers such as Judy Collins, Phil Ochs, Pete Seeger, and Bob Dylan. Together with blues ethnomusicologist Sam Charters, Kalb founded the band that would become known as the New Strangers.
In 1963, he became a member of Van Ronk’s Ragtime Jug Stompers. Kalb explored a variety of musical styles, including acoustic and electronic, after being influenced by the work of African-American bluesmen Son House, Skip James, and Mississippi John Hurt. In 1961, when Kalb was just 15 years old, he co-performed with Bob Dylan during a live broadcast of a concert that was being carried on WBAI-FM. During the year 1963, Kalb was a member of the Ragtime Jug Stompers alongside his instructor Dave Van Ronk.

Charters has written: “It was generally conceded… that… Kalb was the most exciting of the new players.” In 1964, Kalb appeared on Judy Collins’s Fifth Album and also played second guitar on Phil Ochs’s album All the News That’s Fit to Sing, both of which were released in 1964.
