Death : Younes Nazarian, a self-made billionaire philanthropist and leader of the Iranian-Jewish community, died on March 18 in Los Angeles. He was 91 years old. His cause of death was not said.
According to Forward Members of the local Iranian-Jewish community remembered Nazarian as a pro-Israel advocate who donated millions to Israeli organizations as well as Jewish and non-Jewish causes in Southern California.
“He truly believed that strengthening Israel was the only key to the Jewish people’s future survival,” Jimmy Delshad, former mayor of Beverly Hills, said.

Nazarian was born in the Jewish ghetto of Tehran in 1931 to David and Golbahar Nazarian, the children of Georgian pogrom survivors and immigrants to the northwestern Iranian town of Urmia. Nazarian and his older brother, Parviz, grew up in poverty after their father died in 1935, as their mother worked as a tailor.

Nazarian began his career as a young boy selling and replacing light bulbs in Tehran’s alleys and bazaars. He moved to Israel with his mother after the country’s founding and worked in the construction industry alongside his brother.
