Who is Gillie Da Kid?
Gillie da Kid was a hardcore rapper hailing from Philadelphia, whose journey to fame began in 2006 amidst a fiery controversy involving Cash Money Records and its star rapper, Lil Wayne. Gillie da Kid, whose real name is Nasir Fard, had already established himself and his Major Figgas crew as formidable players in Philadelphia’s underground music scene. They had earned their stripes by pushing numerous independent records and mixtapes.
In the late ’90s, Gillie and his seven-person crew inked a deal with Suave House Records, based in Houston, TX. However, when the label faced distribution issues with Universal, Gillie decided to strike out on his own and pursue a solo career. It was during this period that fate brought him face-to-face with Bryan “Baby” Williams, the CEO of Cash Money Records, backstage at a concert in Philadelphia. Almost miraculously, within a week, Gillie was signed to the renowned New Orleans label.
With his reputation surging, mixtape specialists like DJ Kay Slay and DJ Drama eagerly sought out Gillie da Kid to collaborate on fresh material. Subsequently, he landed a deal with the up-and-coming indie label Babygrande Records, which released “The Best of the GDK Mixtapes” compilation in March 2007. The following year, in 2008, Gillie dropped the single “Get Down on the Ground,” later covered by Soulja Boy in 2013 under the title “Get Down.”
