Yaudys Vera and Ogniana Reyes Cause Of Death, Obituary Not Available Yet- The couple slain while riding bicycles on the Rickenbacker Causeway over the weekend has been identified as Yaudys Vera and Ogniana Reyes. The incident occurred on Sunday afternoon.
According to local10.com, A Jeep SUV collided with the pair.
“The car was pretty banged up. You could see that the airbags had gone off and there’s damage to the car. It hit hard,” witness David Winker said.
The couple’s damaged motorcycles were strewn across the road, and the Jeep that hit them sustained considerable front-end damage.
The motorist remained at the site and was issued a citation. At this point, he is not facing any charges.
The fatal accident has once again raised concerns about biker safety. One biker commented, “It takes a death for them to do something.”
After cyclist Aaron Cohen was killed by a hit-and-run driver a decade ago, cycling safety advocate Eli Stiers began to voice his concerns.
He explained, “They put rumble strips on the highway” .he said.
After another cyclist was killed three years later, green bike lanes were created.
Since then, a proposal known as Plan Z was presented to the county, which included a number of safety enhancements, but it was rejected.
More needs to be done, say avid riders, to prevent even more tragedies.
The two cyclists are planning a silent ride around 6 p.m. on Wednesday. At Crandon Park Marina, riders will gather.
Family and friends have set up a GoFundMe page to assist with the couple’s funeral costs.
