William Ethier Death – Portsmouth Rhode Island retired Fire Marshal William Ethier has sadly passed away. He died leaving the entirety of Portsmouth in disbelief and shock. On Monday, the 16th of January 2023, the Portsmouth Fire Department and Portsmouth Firefighters Local 1949 posted on their respective Facebook pages that he had passed away. The specifics of the circumstances surrounding the cause of his passing have not been made public at this time.
William Ethier Career
It was in April of 1996 when Bill was offered a job with the Portsmouth Fire Department as a member of their firefighting team. It was in October of 2010 that he was promoted to the position of Lieutenant, and it was in April of 2018 when he was advanced to the position of Fire Marshal. In April of 2019, he decided to end his career after dedicating 23 years of his life to his business.
Bill was a conscientious worker for the community, and the fact that he was committed to delivering service in an honorable manner is cause for both our thanks and respect. He made a difference in so many people’s lives and assisted a countless number of others. He served as a friend and guide to a great number of people.

William Ethier was the kind of person that animated and enlivened whatever gathering or event he was a part of, and he relished every single moment of his life to the absolute fullest. He was always up for a good time, constantly smiling, and always had a sunny disposition. He never failed to crack a smile. Everyone who had the fortune to know him will be profoundly saddened by their loss of him. He was a force to be reckoned with and never passed up an opportunity to cheer up individuals who were feeling down on themselves. He was a strength to be reckoned with.
Ethier was a tough-as-nails firefighter who could hold his own physically against anyone. William cherished his family more than anything in the world, and he was overjoyed by all of the achievements they had achieved. Whenever they came to pay him a visit at the firehouse, a proud smile spread across his face.
