He produced significant single singles like “Poor People Land,” “Summertime,” “Clarks,” “Like Christmas,” “Ramping Shop,” “Pon De Floor,” and “Dancehall Hero” in 2003, and released two more albums for the renowned UK label Greensleeves in the same year.
Vybz Kartel was nominated for a number of awards, including the VIBE, Source, and UK MOBO. His candidacy for the UK MOBO award in 2004 was removed owing to homophobic content issue.
Vybz Kartel had a public feud with his former colleague Mavado near the end of 2006. Both of them announced an end to their feuds in 2007, and even apologized to their supporters. However, tensions between the two flared up again in 2008, resulting in street violence among Jamaican city youth. Fans of both artists flocked to the streets, and a violent battle ensued. The Jamaican government intervened in 2009 and arranged a meeting between Kartel and Movado. Finally, the ‘range war’ came to a conclusion with an understanding that neither of them would write war songs.
In terms of other ventures, Kartel launched his own liquor line in 2008, dubbed “Street Vybz Rum,” alongside business partner Corey Todd. Both of them introduced their condom line, “Daggering Condoms,” during the same year. Due to problems with Corey Todd, the liquor business was shut down in 2011, but it was reopened in 2012 after all of the issues were reportedly resolved.
In 2011, Kartel launched his own shoe line, dubbed “Addi’s.” His shoe business enabled him to amass a sizable sum of money.
Apart from the aforementioned disagreements, Vybz Kartel has been embroiled in a number of scandals throughout his career. He was arrested for marijuana possession in 2011, but more importantly, he was charged with two murders in 2012, and was found guilty of the murder of Clive ‘Lizard’ Williams, for which he is currently serving a life sentence; he will be eligible for parole after 35 years in prison.
In his less-than-private personal life, Vybz Kartel was married to Stacey Elliot from 2006 to 2008, and is now reportedly still married to Tanesha Johnson, with whom he has three children.
