Viv Gillespie Death – Principal of Suffolk New College Viv Gillespie has sadly passed away after a short battle with illness. She died on Friday 31st March 2023 surrounded by her beloved family. Throughout the time that she spent in Suffolk New College, Viv made it her mission to enhance the quality of life for people not only in this county but also in the surrounding areas by providing great educational and vocational opportunities for everybody.
Viv Gillespie Career
Viv Gillespie has an impressive track record in further education, having taught and managed in the sector for more than 25 years prior to being selected as the Principal of Suffolk New College in the fall of 2015. She was given this position in the autumn of 2015. Gillespie, who holds a first class honors degree in Business Studies, was formerly the Principal at South Worcestershire College. During her tenure there, the institution went from having an Ofsted rating of “inadequate” to having a rating of “excellent” in less than a year thanks to her leadership.
Additionally, she served as the Principal of City College Plymouth for a period of six years. During that time, she oversaw a multi-million-pound investment in the College’s facilities, a rapid increase in student success rates, and the forging of strong links with employers both in the United Kingdom and internationally. Plymouth University has bestowed upon her the degree of Honorary Doctor of Philosophy.

She was responsible for overseeing the creation of new programs and the investment of funds in STEM facilities at Suffolk New College. The College received the grade of Good from Ofsted in 2017, an improvement from the grade of Needs Improvement that it had received previously. Viv serves as a director on a variety of boards, some of which include the Association of Colleges Eastern Region, the Ipswich Chamber of Commerce, and Ipswich Central. In addition to that, she is a member of the board of directors for the Ipswich Opportunity Area Partnership.
She has served in the past as a member of a secondary- level Academy in Plymouth, was the person in charge of establishing UTC Plymouth, and is currently serving as a member of the Orwell Academy Trust. Viv has completed her training to become an Ofsted Inspector for Post-16.
