About Vaughan “Doc” Whitely
Born on August 11, 1958, in West Yorkshire, Vaughan embarked on his military career at the tender age of 16 by enlisting in the Royal Air Force. He dedicated 28 years to the RAF before transitioning to an additional 18 years of service in the Royal Fleet Auxiliary, the civilian branch of the Royal Navy responsible for operating logistic ships.
Over his remarkable 46-year service tenure, Doc, as he was affectionately known, had the opportunity to reside in various locations, including Mainland Europe, Gibraltar, Cyprus, the Middle East, the Far East, and Central America, all while navigating the world’s seven seas. Throughout his extensive career, Vaughan primarily worked as a medic, earning him the nickname “Doc.”
His roles spanned from managing a large General Practice to participating in Search and Rescue missions as the “Dope on a Rope” aboard helicopters. Vaughan’s musical tastes are quite diverse, but he holds a special passion for Folk and Blues music. He has been a regular attendee at Fairport Convention’s Cropredy festival, an annual event held every August, and has had the privilege of meeting and socializing with many of his musical idols.
When it comes to more mainstream popular music, Vaughan considers the 60s and 70s as the golden era that resonates with him. Vaughan’s journey into broadcasting began in the late 70s when he served in Gibraltar with the RAF, working as a radio presenter on Radio East, where he delivered music and news to the forces community. In 2006, Vaughan relocated to Spain and finally retired, making it his permanent residence in January 2020.
The family will release an obituary and funeral arrangements for Vaughan “Doc” Whitely.
