According to the administrators at the University of Connecticut, 15 people were detained and charged with a variety of offences after the University of Connecticut’s victory in the championship game on Monday night, and 16 people were sent to the hospital as a result of their injuries. Police from the University of Connecticut made two additional arrests in connection with the rioting that occurred following the men’s basketball team’s victory in the national championship game Earlier this month.
According to Stephanie Reitz, a representative for the school, both of the people, who have been identified as students, were charged with infractions of a lesser degree and were then released. On the evening of the victory, university police made 14 arrests on the Storrs campus, 11 of which were students. According to university officials, those arrested were responsible for turning street lights upside down, lighting fires, and wreaking havoc on campus.
Additionally, sixteen persons were transported to the hospital for evaluation, but it was determined that their injuries were not serious enough to warrant hospitalization. Following the filing of these further charges, a total of 15 people have been accused of involvement in the rioting. According to the authorities, Justin Tatsapaugh, 20, used a metal rod to damage a designated university police vehicle.
He was responsible for more than $2,500 worth of damage to the automobile. The charges against Tatsapaugh, a resident of New Hartford, include criminal mischief in the first degree, breach of peace in the second degree, and reckless endangerment in the second degree. He was freed after posting a bond of $3,000. Outside of the Benton Museum of Art, the police said that Jose Oliveras Suarez assisted a gang in flipping a University of Connecticut van. Oliveras Suarez, who is a resident of Hartford, was arrested and charged with first-degree criminal mischief, first-degree riot, second-degree breach of peace, and second-degree reckless endangerment. He was freed after posting a bond of $3,000.
As the investigation progresses, the institution has stated that additional arrests are anticipated. UConn is waiting for invoices on some repair and replacement supplies, and the university continues to identify damage in a variety of sites throughout campus, according to a statement released by the institution. This is one of the reasons why the damage estimate has not yet been finalized.
