Travis Jones Death – The Richland County Coroner’s Office (RCCO) has officially identified the young victim of the tragic shooting that occurred in the early hours of Monday morning, July 17th, 2023. The 17-year-old boy has been identified as Travis D. Jones, Jr. The incident took place in the 4200 block of Wentworth Drive, near Lorick Avenue, at approximately 3:30 a.m. The Columbia Police Chief, W.H. “Skip” Holbrook, revealed that the Shotspotter system alerted officers to multiple gunshots in the vicinity.
Upon their arrival, authorities discovered Davis outside and immediately provided medical aid. However, despite the efforts of EMS, he was pronounced dead at the scene. Additionally, three other individuals were injured as a result of the shooting. Among the wounded are an 11-year-old girl, a 15-year-old girl, and a 16-year-old boy. According to an update from the Columbia Police Department (CPD), the 11-year-old remains in serious condition under the care of medical staff, while the 15-year-old and 16-year-old sustained non-life-threatening injuries.
As of now, no arrests have been made in connection with the incident. Investigators believe that the shooting was an isolated incident that originated from a “prearranged fight between girls via social media.” Chief Holbrook urges anyone with information regarding the incident to come forward and provide tips to Crime Stoppers. According to the Richland County Sheriff’s Department, a shooting in Columbia on Sunday night, June 26, 2023, claimed the life of a youngster. The homicide victim has been identified as Jayvion Mayrant, a 19-year-old Camden native, according to Richland County Coroner Naida Rutherford. According to a news release from the sheriff’s office, deputies responded to a complaint regarding a shooting in the 100 block of Indigo Springs Drive at around 8 o’clock. That’s around 1.5 miles from Ridge View High School, close to the intersection with Summit Parkway.
According to the press release, deputies discovered Mayrant at the scene with an upper body wound. The teenager passed away after being brought to a local hospital. There were no other recorded injuries.
Travis Jones Jr.’s obituary and funeral arrangements will be released by the family at a later date.
