About Texas A&M University
Texas A&M institution in College Station, Texas, is a public, land-grant research institution. It was founded in 1876 and became Texas A&M University’s flagship in 1948. Texas A&M is the only Texas university with land-, sea-, and space-grant status. It is an “R1: Doctoral Universities – Very high research activity” member of the Association of American Universities. The first public university in Texas, the Agricultural and Mechanical College of Texas (A.M.C.), opened on October 4, 1876, under the 1862 Morrill Land-Grant Act.
After WWII, the college grew to its largest enrollment before its first significant enrollment stagnation post-war. In the 1960s, under President James Earl Rudder, the college desegregated became coeducational and eliminated the Corps of Cadets. Enrollment rose again. The Texas Legislature renamed the college Texas A&M University in 1963 to reflect its increased activities and academic offerings. The letters “A&M” were kept to honour the university’s earlier name.
