Beachgoer killed after umbrella impales her in the chest in South Carolina

On Wednesday, a beachgoer died after being pierced in the chest by a beach umbrella that had become loose, according to the authorities. Tammy Perreault was struck by an umbrella around 12:40 p.m. as she was visiting a beach in Garden City, South Carolina, the chief deputy coroner for Horry County, Tamara Willard, reported to various news sites. The umbrella had been dislodged from its anchoring by the wind. Willard stated that around one hour later, Perreault, 63, passed away at the hospital from chest trauma.

According to the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission, beach umbrellas have spiked end that helps push them into the sand, and their wide canopies allow them to get caught up in a strong wind if they are not anchored properly. However, if the umbrellas are properly anchored, the spiked end helps push them into the sand.

According to figures provided by a federal body, beach umbrellas are responsible for the injuries of approximately 3,000 persons annually. After a woman from Virginia was murdered by an umbrella in 2016, US Senators Tim Kaine and Mark Warner of Virginia ordered the safety agency to evaluate the safety guidelines for beach umbrellas and begin a safety campaign.
