Tamil Man Dies After Sri Lankan Police Officer Kicks Motorbike Off Course In Jaffna:
After Sri Lankan police kicked the motorcycle a guy was riding, he crashed into a concrete pillar and died from his injuries. The man was from Tamil Nadu. The individual has been identified as Koppay South resident Selvanayakam Pradeepan, 41. According to Sri Lankan authorities, Pradeepan did not halt at a Jaffna checkpoint.
After receiving a report, an officer further down the road allegedly blocked Pradeepan’s route and kicked his motorcycle. The bike lost direction and collided with a concrete pillar. Spectators found Pradeepan severely injured and took him to Tellippalai Hospital, where he was declared dead upon admission.
Since then, the officer suspected of triggering the accident has been taken into custody by Sri Lankan authorities. Many others are still skeptical, though, as to whether charges would be filed or the death will be handled with justice. In the Tamil homeland, Sri Lankan police officers are still operating with impunity, and there are persistent claims of torture and other human rights violations that go unpunished.
Another Tamil guy was beaten by Sri Lankan police earlier in April when he requested that they return his confiscated phone. A young Tamil man who had just been freed from Jaffna prison passed away in January of this year. A young Tamil man was tortured to death by Sri Lankan police in November 2023.
