Stanley James Browne grew up in Sydney with Chelsea United, Kingsford and Town Hall (Domain). In 1959, he played nine lower grade games for the Rabbitohs, scoring three tries.
Mr Browne served on the South Sydney Football Club’s Board of Directors from December 1991 to July 1999, when he stepped down together with Mervyn Neave, Bernard O’Neil, and Ray Furse (who died in December) to enable members of ‘Group14′ to join the Board ahead of ‘The Fightback’.
Chairman of the Marketing Committee from 1995-98. Mr Browne represented the Club on the Private Members Reviewing Committee from 1991-98.
Mr Browne was admitted as a Life Member of the South Sydney Football Club during the 12th Annual General Meeting of the Members of the Member Co. on March 10, 2019.
“The Rabbitohs have always been at our strongest and most steadfast when the interests of the Club are placed above the individual,” said Rabbitohs Chairman Nicholas Pappas. Mervyn, Ray, Stan, and Bernard placed the Club’s interests ahead of their own in 1999.
Mr Browne’s funeral will be place at Eastern Suburbs Memorial Park Crematorium on March 18. Mr Browne’s family would want to see old Rabbitohs friends and colleagues at his burial to pay respects to a guy who loved South Sydney.
The South Sydney Rabbitohs will wear black armbands against the Brisbane Broncos on Friday night.
