On Friday, November 18, 2022, an altercation that started in the food court of South Park Mall developed into a gunshot that led the neighborhood’s residents to believe there was an active shooter. Police claimed that the “shooting in progress” report, though it involved two persons, was not an instance of an active shooter. After a verbal altercation, according to San Antonio Police Department Sgt. Washington Moscoso, the two groups of people—most of whom were “juveniles or young adults”—began fighting in the food court.
A suspect shot the victim once in the torso during the altercation and then escaped. Around 2 p.m., police arrived at the mall at 2310 SW Military Drive and began attending to the victim, according to Moscoso. The shooting victim, who was taken in serious condition to a nearby hospital, did not mention his name or age. Despite the closure of the food court, Moscoso claims there was no widespread evacuation of the mall.
According to early reports, the suspects ran to the nearby H-E-B. As police helicopters circled overhead, the business was closed. Police detained four persons, while Moscoso remained mum on whether the shooter was one of them. A few persons were taken into custody for questioning while homicide detectives were on the scene. According to Moscoso, this was an occurrence between two groups of people who were acquainted. Then he clarified that he was unsure of the two groups’ shared background and whether it was gang-related.
