Attendance at school has been a challenge not only in St. Joseph but also around the country. The school system decided to engage nine attendance interventionists in order to assist in addressing the problems with student attendance. Emily Bowman, who works as an attendance interventionist at Lafayette High School, has stated that “our job extends much beyond merely taking attendance.” “It’s about being that safe person who a student and their family can confide in so that they can get treatment,” the speaker said.
Record of attendance stats
According to kq2 the attendance percentage at SJSD dropped as low as 70% when the epidemic was going on. According to Dr. Kendra Lau, the present percentage of attendance is 80%, and the projected rate for the 2022-2023 school year is 85%. Dr. Shadae Harris, CEO, and President of Groundwork, was called in by Dr. Lau to train the new position so that they could boost attendance and improve their approach.
Official’s statement
According to Dr. Harris, “So the first thing that we’re doing is we’re starting with the foundation on how do we make sure that we are not just incorporating families, but that we’re engaging them.” “What we want to do as a division is lead with our ears and really listen to our families. We also want to approach it more from the vantage point of collaboration, so that we are doing this with families rather than to them,” said the leader of the division.
“I think it’s something that the district has struggled with for a little while,” added Bowman. “I think that’s something that the district has grappled with.” “And having this training is going to be incredibly advantageous because you can start with us, and then it can expand from there,” he said. “And having this training is going to be really good.”
Beth Hernandez-Rice, who works as an interventionist at Benton High School, stated that “We’ll talk to them about their self esteem, about their self worth” during the sessions. We will have a conversation with them about the emotions that they are experiencing at school in regard to their interactions with other students.
Those who are in training have reported that the current school year has been challenging, but they have noticed that certain kids are making improvement. “We had a problem with kids coming to class late, so I made sure to take my time with each child when I sat down with them individually. They are making an effort to cut down on their tardiness, and when they arrive at work each day, they proclaim, “I’m here on time.” And my response is, “Yes, that’s terrific,” as it were. Just to let you know, I’m overjoyed to have you here, “Bowman added.
The school system requires more people to work in the interventionist field.
