Shooting in Southwest Atlanta-3 Atlanta officers shot: ATLANTA – Further details on the southwest Atlanta incident that left one suspect dead and three Atlanta police officers hospitalized have been made public by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.
The suspect was recognized by the GBI as a resident of Atlanta. His name won’t be made public until his nearest of kin is contacted. More details regarding the events leading up to the shooting in the Capitol View area were also disclosed by the investigators.
At approximately 5:15 p.m. on Saturday, Atlanta police were called to the intersection of Genessee Avenue and Fairbanks Street SW in response to reports of a man brandishing a gun. When they got there, they discovered the man standing close to the Desoto and Genessee Avenue crossroads with a revolver. They said he produced the gun when they attempted to approach him.
According to reports, one of the officers tackled the man and forced him to the ground. They were struggling when “what sounded like a gunshot could be heard,” the GBI investigation stated. The suspect was shot and killed by the officers.
As previously reported, three officers were injured in the gunfire: one was shot in the shoulder, one in the leg, and one officer’s arm was grazed. After being brought to Grady Memorial Hospital, two of the three had successful surgeries. The suspect’s gun was found at the scene, according to the GBI. The investigation is still underway.
