Deputies from the Washington County Sheriff’s Office responded to the 18200 block of Roycroft Drive in Hagerstown, Maryland, at around 5:40 PM on Tuesday, March 28, 2023, after receiving reports of a gunshot there. An adult male victim was identified and sent to the hospital after arriving at the scene with injuries to his leg that were not considered to be life-threatening.
The culprit and another person got into a domestic argument, and the victim ended up becoming involved in it later on. This disagreement was the root cause of the incident. The suspect fired multiple bullets at the victim when they were both outside of the residence. During the time that the incident occurred, there were other people present outside. The culprit managed to get away from the scene before law enforcement officers arrived.
The suspect, later identified as James Michael Barnes Sr, 28, from Hagerstown, was spotted in the general neighborhood of Williamsport, which led to his apprehension and subsequent capture. Barnes was found in the Williamsport region. Barnes has been charged with Felony Crime of Violence Involving the Use of a Firearm, Attempted Second-Degree Murder, Assault in the First Degree, Assault in the Second Degree, Reckless Endangerment, and all three levels of Assault in the First Degree.
At this point, there is no likelihood of Barnes getting released on bond from the Washington County Detention Center where he is now being held.
