John Burroughs High School Shooting Today – An anonymous caller gave a false report of a school shooting taking place at John Burroughs High School this afternoon to the Burbank Police Department. At about 2:37 p.m. today, Tuesday, April 4th, 2023, an unnamed person dialed the Communication Center of the Burbank Police Department and reported that many pupils had been shot in a classroom at the John Burroughs High School, which is situated at 1920 West Clark Avenue.
No shooting trace found
The school was informed of the report as soon as it was received, and police officers responded to the scene. Shortly after the dispatcher got the call, the first cops on the scene arrived, and without delay, they began conducting an exhaustive search of the school grounds. Officers from the Burbank Police Department carried out a comprehensive search of the school campus, but they were unable to identify any victims or evidence of a shooting. As soon as it was determined that the campus was secure, students were allowed to return to their classes.
False report is against the law
The Burbank Police Department is subjected to what is colloquially known as “swatting” occurrences on occasion when it receives fake emergency calls involving claims of a shooting, the threat of an assault with a knife, or a bomb threat. These calls entail the act of making a false report of an emergency in order to bring about the dispatch of a large number of armed police officers or Special Weapons and Tactics teams (SWAT) to a particular address.
The purpose of these calls is to cause panic in the community. This particular form of falsely reporting an emergency is against the law and can be rather hazardous. Calls to 911 that are faked or made in jest put the lives of real first responders and members of the public in danger and tie up valuable resources. In the United States, hoaxes and fake emergency calls have caused people to become seriously injured and even lose their lives.
This matter is taken extremely seriously by the Burbank Police Department, and the agency will look into any and all fraudulent claims of emergencies. Anyone who is accused of making a false report of an emergency or a crime will be held responsible, both criminally and civilly, for any expenditures involved with the reaction of public safety officials.
