Since 2004, Sheikh Khalifa has served as the Gulf country’s second president. He is credited with bringing the United Arab Emirates, a modest desert sheikhdom with seven emirates, to international prominence and guiding the country through the 2008 financial crisis.

His role remained mostly ceremonial after that, while he continued to issue decrees, and his brother, Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed, is widely regarded as the UAE’s de-facto ruler, overseeing the country’s daily operations.
