The deaths of a man and a kid were recovered from waters off Morocco’s western coast, while 24 people were saved when a rubber boat carrying migrants capsized, according to Spain’s Maritime Rescue agency on Wednesday. According to the Spanish NGO Caminando Fronteras (Walking Borders), more than 60 persons were onboard, with more than 30 reported missing. It accused Spanish officials of failing to help the migrants in a timely manner.
The NGO watches migrant boats in the region in an attempt to assist them and gets phone calls from persons aboard the boats or their relatives. The Associated Press was told by a Spanish Maritime Rescue spokeswoman who was not permitted to be named in the media that the agency got a call from the yacht Tuesday evening. A plane dispatched from Spain’s Canary Islands found it 70 kilometers (44 miles) off Africa’s northwest coast and 160 kilometers south of the islands.
The plane crew reported no early symptoms of floating concerns, according to the spokeswoman, and the service had no information on when or why the boat sank. He also stated that Morocco claimed responsibility for the rescue mission, and that a merchant ship cruising in the vicinity had drawn up close to the dinghy in response to Moro’s signal.
