About Sacred Heart University
Sacred Heart University had its inception in 1963, courtesy of the vision and leadership of Walter W. Curtis, the Bishop of the Diocese of Bridgeport. The university’s roots can be traced back to the former Notre Dame Catholic High School’s grounds, where it took its first steps. What sets this institution apart is its distinct character—it is administered and staffed by the laity, fostering a strong sense of community and local engagement.
During the period from 1976 to 1986, the university was led by the distinguished American ambassador and diplomat, Thomas Patrick Melady. A significant milestone in the university’s history occurred in 1990 when Sacred Heart University erected its first dormitories, marking the commencement of residential facilities. Over time, it has expanded its residential offerings, boasting a total of 10 residential buildings, with approximately half of its full-time undergraduate students choosing to reside within the university’s housing facilities.
In 2010, Sacred Heart University embarked on a new endeavor by announcing plans for the construction of a cutting-edge Health and Wellness Center. This facility, situated on Park Avenue and conveniently located across from the main campus, embodies the university’s commitment to holistic health and well-being.
