Bob Waltrip “has been a great friend to Rice Athletics.,” said Joe Karlgaard, the director of Rice athletics, in a recent statement. He was well recognized for his generosity, friendliness, and shared vision for our indoor training facility. This had a significant effect on Rice student-athletes’ daily life. He will always be a Rice Owl and be cherished by the community.
Bob significantly improved our program and helped us reach new heights. He was a major advocate for Rice Sports and contributed much to the accomplishments of the student-athletes. His influence will go on in the Owl family for all time.
Waltrip joined Rice Athletics in 1953 on a football scholarship, but after his father passed away, he had to take over the running of the family’s funeral parlor, which put an end to his hopes of playing for the Owls. His enthusiasm for Rice Football never waned even after he finished his schooling at the University of Houston, where he received a bachelor’s degree in business administration. His main contribution in 2019 made it possible for the vision of an indoor facility to materialize.
