The Palm Desert Mall Has Been the Scene of a Break-In The Shops at Palm Desert, located in the 72000 block of Highway 111, called the sheriff’s office around 5:14 p.m. on Tuesday.
The Riverside County Sheriff’s Department initially reacted to claims of an assault with a dangerous weapon, however, it was later verified that the incident was a grand theft at a store located within the mall. A small number of shoppers tweeted that the mall was on lockdown due to an active shooter. Instead, officers uncovered a “grand theft from a business at the location,” the sheriff’s office reported. A KESQ report describes the incident as a smash-and-grab.
The sheriff’s office made the announcement shortly before 7 p.m. that there was no active shooter. The suspects “used an unknown object to shatter display cases, took unknown merchandise, and fled the location,” wrote Sergeant Wenndy Brito-Gonzalez. The suspects were described to the deputies. A short time later, all four suspects were apprehended in the Palm Desert neighborhood near Monterey and Dinah Shore.
