He is most well-known for his work as an underwater stuntman, particularly in the film Creature from the Black Lagoon on 1954, in which he played the titular Gill-man throughout the film’s underwater scenes. Browning returned to the role of the creature for the underwater sequences of the film’s sequels, Vengeance of the Creature (1955) and The Monster Walks Among Us (1956). Browning also collaborated with Jack Cowden on the creation of the television series Flipper and directed multiple episodes of the show during its run in the 1960s.
Browning made his debut as a director of a feature film in 1973 with the picture Salty, which he also collaborated on writing with Cowden. Browning then went on to make Mr. No Legs (1978). The underwater sections in Thunderball, the fourth James Bond film produced by Eon Productions and released in 1965, were directed by Browning.
Browning also directed the underwater sequences in Never Say Never Again, another 007 film (1983). In addition to that, he was the director of the underwater sequences in the comedies Hey Down There (1969) and Caddyshack (1988). (1980). Browning was born in Florida, and in 2012, the state of Florida honored him by inducting him into the Florida Artists Hall of Fame. He was honored by the Rondo Hatton Vintage Horror Awards by being inducted into the Monster Child Hall of Fame this year (2019).
Before he passed away, Browning was thought to be the only original actor still living who had ever played a role in any of the Universal Classic Monsters films. Browning is the father of Ricou Browning, Jr., who follows in his footsteps as an actor, marine coordinator, and stuntman.
