He was a co-founder of Columbia Hospital Corporation in 1987; in 1989, the firm combined with Hospital Corporation of America to form Columbia / HCA, the largest for-profit health care company in the United States. When a scandal involving the company’s business practices and accounting methods erupted in 1997, he was compelled to resign from the board of directors. The corporation recently acknowledged to committing fourteen felonies and agreed to pay the US government more than $1.7 billion.
Scott went on to work in the venture capital market thereafter. He continued to engage in the medical sector, becoming a major shareholder in the Solantic hospital network and Pharmac pharmacies. He was also a co-owner of the Texas Rangers baseball franchise for a period, with future President George W. Bush as his business partner.
In terms of his political career, his first significant endeavor was the Conservatives for Patients’ Rights organization, which opposed President Barack Obama’s health-care reform plans; Scott contributed $5 million of his personal wealth to help fund the organization’s media campaign. In 2010, he ran for governor of Florida under the Republican Party banner and defeated his major opponent, state attorney general Bill McCollum. On the other hand, he ran against Democrat Alex Sink, who was the state’s Chief Financial Officer at the time; Scott received 48.87 percent of the vote, while Sink received 47.72 percent.
