Rick O’Brien Death – An officer has died and two others injured following a tragic shooting incident that happened on Friday morning in Coquitlam. The victim has been identified as Constable Rick O’Brien. According to reports, Constable Rick O’Brien with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police in Maple Ridge, British Columbia passed away while executing a search warrant. He was 51 years old.

How did the incident happen?

In an earlier statement today, the Ridge Meadows RCMP detachment reported that officers led by O’Brien and his team were in the process of executing a warrant at a residence on Glen Drive. During the operation, an altercation ensued between the officers and a man, leading to injuries sustained by several officers and the use of firearms, ultimately resulting in the man being shot.

Who was Rick O’Brien?

Rick O’Brien served as a Constable within the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, stationed in Maple Ridge, British Columbia. His assignment was within the Uniformed Community Response Unit (UCRU) at the Pitt Meadows detachment. UCRU is a community-oriented policing unit focused on serving the needs of youth, homeless individuals, those with mental health concerns, and the First Nations community. It also provides proactive support to general duty officers.

In his inaugural year of service, Rick played a pivotal role alongside six colleagues in thwarting a violent home invasion, leading to the apprehension of four armed suspects. For their exceptional efforts, Rick and his fellow officers were honored with a Commissioner’s commendation pin and a medal of valor, distinctions he proudly displays on his Red Serge uniform.

Prior to his police career, Rick had worn many hats, working as an Education Assistant, Mental Health Worker, and Youth Worker. He had held numerous supervisory roles in these capacities. This diverse professional background equipped Rick with the invaluable qualities of patience, empathy, determination, and a strong work ethic, all of which he brings to his role as a police officer.

Rick was not only a dedicated law enforcement professional but also a compassionate and devoted family man. Family held a central place in his heart, and he cherished his roles as a brother, son, father, and husband. Together with his wife, Nicole, they shared the joys and challenges of raising a blended family of six children, three from each side, creating a lively and captivating household dynamic.

The family will release an obituary and funeral arrangements for Rick O’Brien.
