Renzo Smith and Shawn Jackson Death – Following Huguenot High School’s graduation ceremony at the Altria Theater in Richmond, Virginia, someone opened fire at Monroe Park, killing Shawn Jackson, 18, and his father Renzo Smith, 36, on Tuesday, June 6th, 2023. On behalf of the bereaved family, community activist Charles Willis, who heads the organization United Communities Against Crime, announced the names and pictures of the gunshot victims.
Renzo Smith and Shawn Jackson’s cause of death
Rick Edwards, the interim police chief of Richmond, revealed earlier on Tuesday that Jackson had just taken part in the high school graduation ceremony while withholding the teen’s name. Following the gunshot, one person was detained, according to Edwards. Investigations continue into the shooting’s motivation, which resulted in at least five further injuries.
According to Edwards, a 31-year-old shooting victim is still in the hospital with serious gunshot wounds. A 14-year-old boy, a 32-year-old male, a 55-year-old man, and a 58-year-old male were the four shooting victims who had what was termed as non-life-threatening wounds. Following a gunshot, police initially detained two people; however, only one has now been identified as a suspect, and the other was let go.
Suspect arrested by authorities
Edwards predicted that the suspect, a 19-year-old man, will face at least two counts of second-degree murder and possibly more. He said there is speculation that the suspect knows at least one of the victims. He stated that when the suspect was apprehended, he was carrying a number of firearms. The suspect, 19, may or may not be enrolled in high school right now, Edwards continued.
Tuesday afternoon, the Monroe Park area or nearby was the subject of a shooting alert from VCU Police. On one end of the park in downtown Richmond, on the VCU campus, is the Altria Theater, which hosts high school graduation ceremonies for Richmond Public Schools. The remaining graduation ceremonies at Richmond Public Schools have all been postponed until further notice. The Richmond Public Schools have postponed all events for Tuesday night and Wednesday’s classes.
Levar Stoney, the mayor of Richmond, described the incident as awful and horrific. Not only for the sake of the affected families but also for the city, he promised to bring those responsible for the massacre to justice. Later, Interim Police Chief Edwards declared that he didn’t think the incident had gang ties.
Renzo Smith and Shawn Jackson’s obituary and funeral arrangements will be released by the family at a later date.
