Sharon Yates has rented the same property for more than a decade, but her landlord wants to sell, and she is concerned, as do many tenants, that she will be evicted.
She and her co-tenant sister have been advised to leave the house in Atherton, far north Queensland, after nearly 12 years.
Ms Yates claims she has been looking for a new house for almost a year. She’s had no luck despite agents assuring her she’s one of 80 applicants.
It’s a typical issue in a region where the current vacancy rate is just 0.2 percent, tied with the Southern Downs for the lowest in the state.
“The owner wants to get away from being a landlord,” Ms Yates explained, “so she issued us notice to go on March 24, last year.”
Originally, Ms Yates stated that her family had to be out by May of last year, so they began looking for a home. “But,” she added, “we’re still here.”
