The Clarington Eagles’ bid for a provincial title was cut short by one goal. The Eagles’ 2021-22 season came to an end on Sunday when they were defeated 3-2 in overtime in the Provincial Junior Hockey League (PJHL) championship game by the Lakeshore Canadiens.
The game took place at Guelph’s Gryphon Centre. The Canadiens won the Schmalz Cup, which is given to Ontario’s Junior C hockey champions.
The Clarington team entered the championship game with troubled hearts. Rebecca Baumhauer, Dean’s wife and mother of Eagles overage defenseman Nate Baumhauer, died early Sunday morning after a long battle with cancer.
In the title game, the younger Baumhauer came within a whisker of scoring the game-winning goal late in regulation time. And behind the Eagles’ bench, Dean Baumhauer was in a familiar role.
