Who Is Ice Cube?
O’Shea Jackson Sr., better known by his stage name Ice Cube, was born on June 15, 1969. He is an American rapper, actor, and director. His lyrics on N.W.A.’s Straight Outta Compton album from 1988 helped make gangsta rap popular, and his political rap solo albums AmeriKKKa’s Most Wanted (1990), Death Certificate (1991), and The Predator (1992) were well received by critics and sold well. Since the early 1990s, he has also been making movies. As a member of N.W.A, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2016.
Jackson was born in Los Angeles, and in 1986, he put together his first rap group, called C.I.A. He started the first gangsta rap group, N.W.A., with Eazy-E and Dr. Dre in 1987. As the group’s lead rapper, he wrote some of Dre’s and most of Eazy’s lyrics for Straight Outta Compton, an important album that helped define early West Coast hip hop and set it apart from East Coast rap. N.W.A. was also known for its violent lyrics, which threatened to attack both abusive police and innocent people.
This caused a lot of trouble. In late 1989, Cube left N.W. because Eazy-E and Jerry Heller had a money fight about how to run the group. He teamed up with New York artists and started a solo rap career.
