Rahm didn’t seem like the kind to seek a career in politics when he was younger. He went to Bernard Zell Anshe Emet Day School, then Romona School, Locust Junior High School, and New Trier West High School, among other schools. He was also persuaded to enroll in ballet classes at the Evanston School of Ballet. Following that, he studied and graduated from Sarah Lawrence College with a bachelor’s degree in Liberal Arts, then went on to Northwestern University to complete his master’s degree in Speech and Communication. He was elected to be a member of the Student Senate at Sarah Lawrence during his stay there.
Through Illinois Public Action, Emanuel began working on his political career. He’d spend some time there doing fundraisers as well as working on Democratic politics. He worked for a number of politicians, including Paul Simon during the 1984 U.S. Senate election and Richard M. Daley during his 1989 campaign for Mayor of Chicago. He would also become the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee’s national campaign director. Later, Rahm became a senior advisor and worked at the White House from 1993 to 1998, after serving on the campaign finance committee for Bill Clinton’s presidential campaign, which Clinton won.
He began as an Assistant to the President for Political Affairs before becoming the President’s Senior Advisor for Policy and Strategy. He became well-known for his combative demeanor, but he left from his position in 1998 to pursue a career in finance. In under a year, he joined the investment banking firm Wasserstein Perella and rose through the ranks to become managing director of the Chicago office. He was so successful that during his two-and-a-half year tenure at the company, he made roughly $16.2 million, greatly increasing his net worth.
Clinton assigned Emanuel to the Federal Home Loan Mortgage Corporation, or Freddie Mac, in 2000. He stayed for a year before running for the House of Representatives in the United States in 2002. He won and occupied the seat left vacant by Rod Blagojevich, serving for three terms as a member of Illinois’ 5th congressional district. He became the Chair of the House Democratic Caucus during his time there, and after Barack Obama’s election, he became the White House Chief of Staff. He resigned in 2011 to run for mayor of Chicago, and he subsequently defeated Richard M. Daley. He also defeated Jesus “Chuy” Garcia in his second campaign in 2015.
Emanuel has been married to Amy Merrit Rule since 1994; they have three children and live in the north side of Chicago, however he travels abroad every year. Rahm is also a triathlete and a devout devotee of Judaism. Due to recent troubles in the city, particularly following the police shooting of 17-year-old Laquan McDonald, rumors have been circulating about his imminent demise and likely resignation as mayor.
