On Monday afternoon, December 18, 2017, US military personnel shot at a man who was reportedly trying to break into an RAF base in Suffolk. Police said the man was only cut and bruised when he was taken into custody. A spokesman for the Ministry of Defense said that there was a “security incident” at RAF Mildenhall in Suffolk, which caused the base to be locked down. US air force planes mostly use the RAF base.
Suffolk police were in charge of the investigation. It is thought that a person tried to drive through an entry point at the base. The force called it “significant” and asked people to stay away from the area around the camp. A 44-year-old guy was taken into custody, and police said he was suspected of criminal trespass. The man has been put under arrest. Police are not looking for anyone else on the site because the incident is not being viewed as terrorism.
A message on the RAF Mildenhall Facebook page said that the base had been put on lockdown around 1 p.m. and that emergency workers had been called to deal with the problem. It was reported about three hours later that the lockdown was over.
A police statement said: “Suffolk police were contacted at approximately 1.40 pm today to reports of a disturbance at RAF Mildenhall in Suffolk. The base was put into lockdown and units responded immediately. Shots were fired by American service personnel and a man has been detained with cuts and bruises and taken into custody. No other people have been injured as a result of the incident.”
