About Peter Macdougall
He was born on October 1, 1960, to the late Catherine (Cogan) and Lawrence MacDougall. He attended college after Memorial High School but soon recognized that nursing was his true calling. He earned his Registered Nurse degree from Victoria General Hospital in 1984. Peter was a lifelong learner who went on to acquire a Master of Health Studies from Athabasca University and a BSc in Nursing from St. Francis Xavier University after graduating from the VGH School of Nursing.
Peter had a long and fruitful career and played various parts. Before assuming his first position in leadership as a Health Services Manager at the QE11 Health Sciences Centre in 2005, he began his career as a nurse at the IWK and then worked as a nurse in Cape Breton and Florida.
In that capacity, he oversaw clinical teams in the intensive care unit (ICU), thoracic surgery, and the Integrated Palliative Care Service. He also played a crucial part in the early design of the first hospice in Nova Scotia. Throughout his career, Peter maintained a strong interest in innovation. As Health Service Director, Emergency Services, and in his most recent position as Clinical Transformation Information Informatics Officer for One Person One Record, Nova Scotia Health/IWK, he continued to direct and manage sizable clinical teams and multiple health care programs.
Achievement
As the first male RN to hold the position of president of the College of Registered Nurses Association in 2012, he created history. In this capacity, he traveled the province meeting nurses and rekindling pride in the nursing profession in Nova Scotia.
