Falk’s right eye was surgically removed as a child due to retinoblastoma. He had to wear an artificial eye for the rest of his life as a result of this, but it didn’t bother him too much because he still practiced sports. At the age of 12, he had one of his first acting roles in a play of “The Pirates of Penzance.” He graduated from Ossining High School in 1945 and went on to Hamilton College. He tried to enlist during World War II but was turned down due to his lost eye. He then worked for the United States Merchant Marine for a year as a cook and mess boy. He returned to Hamilton and went on to the University of Wisconsin before transferring to the New School for Social Research and earning a degree in literature and political science. After graduating from high school, he traveled to Europe and worked in (then) Yugoslavia before returning to the United States to pursue a Master of Public Administration degree at Syracuse University, where he found work at the Connecticut State Budget Bureau.

He became a member of the Mark Twain Masquers and began acting in plays such as “The Crucible” and “The Country Girl.” He finally left the Bureau and pursued a career as a professional actor. In New York, he then had opportunity to act on stage, such as in “Don Juan” and “The Iceman Cometh.” He debuted on Broadway in 1956 in a performance of “Diary of a Scoundrel.”

He couldn’t get film employment due of his eye, despite his success on stage. He made his screen debut in tiny roles in films like “The Bloody Brood” and “Pretty Boy Floyd.” In the film “Murder, Inc.,” he began to gain acclaim, and his performance would lead to other acting possibilities. He was nominated for an Academy Award for his role in the 1960 series “The Witness.” After that, he appeared in films such as “Pocketful of Miracles,” “Robin and the Seven Hoods,” and “The Great Race.”

Around this time, he began to appear in a variety of television roles, and he became particularly well-known as a result of the series “Columbo.” He was a police detective who was occasionally absent-minded in his portrayal of the title character. The character initially featured in “Prescription; Murder,” but due to his popularity, he was given the opportunity to reprise the role in other films and his own television show. “Columbo” ran from 1971 through 1978 as part of the “NBC Mystery Movie” series. The character was later shifted to a different network, and Peter continued to play him until 2003.

Peter married Alyce Mayo in 1960, and the couple adopted two kids before divorcing in 1976. In 1977, he married Shera Danese, with whom he remained until his death in 2011.
