Obituary – Washington County Attorney Pete Orput Has Died At 66

Pete Orput, Washington County Attorney, died late Sunday at his home in Stillwater, according to county officials. He was 66 years old at the time. No other details were provided, and officials stated the county attorney’s office would issue a statement on Monday.

According to startribune.com, Orput declared in January that he would not seek re-election for a fourth term and that he would step down at the end of the year. He had been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease for more than a year when he made the declaration. He remarked of his 11 years as county attorney, “It’s often thankless, but I think it’s really been the greatest privilege of my life.”

Orput was a high school history teacher before becoming a lawyer. He was a former Marine who served in Vietnam. He worked for the Minnesota Attorney General’s Office, the Minnesota Department of Corrections as general counsel, and the Hennepin County Attorney’s Office as a violent crime prosecutor.

After being elected Washington County Attorney in 2010, Orput made a name for himself by filing serious criminal charges against heroin dealers, including third-degree murder charges in overdose deaths. He fought tirelessly to secure treatment for addicts who had gotten themselves into trouble with the law.
