Obituary – Richard Hindmarsh Has Died, What Happened?
The IGS regrets to inform you that Richard C.A. Hindmarsh died on April 1, 2022, at his home in Cambridgeshire, United Kingdom. Richard became a member of the IGS in 1987 and was an active member for the rest of his career. During his 45 years as an IGS member, he served on the IGS Council and several committees.
According to igsoc.org, Richard received the Seligman Crystal in 2019 and had only just received the Crystal itself at an online ceremony this past February due to Covid delays. Richard’s illustrious career in glaciology began with a groundbreaking mathematical analysis of deformable subglacial beds.
He went on to become a leading theorist in large-scale ice-sheet dynamics, subglacial bed-form dynamics, and a wide range of glaciological instabilities. He highlighted the research he has done over the course of his active career in a recent speech in the IGS Global Seminar Series, which immediately followed the belated presentation of the 2019 Seligman Crystal to him.
