Suh was also a finalist for the Athlete of the Year award from the Portland Tribune. He was the sixth-ranked defensive tackle in the United States at the time, and he had several official visits to several states before opting to join the Nebraska Cornhuskers in January 2005, and he enrolled at the University of Nebraska shortly after.

He started all 14 games as a reserve defensive lineman in 2006, earning him “The Sporting News'” freshman All-Big 12 accolades. He then became the first defensive lineman in Nebraska history to lead the team in tackles since 1973. He was named the Associated Press college football Player of the Year and a unanimous first-team All-American in 2009. Suh was selected the 2009 AP Player of Year in December of the same year, after being named one of five nominees for the Walter Camp Award and one of three contenders for the Outland Trophy.

Suh joined with The Agency Sports Management & Marketing the next year and was taken second overall by the Detroit Lions in the 2010 NFL Draft, receiving a $68 million contract and playing for the team for the next five years. Suh became the highest-paid defensive player in NFL history when he signed a $114 million contract with the Miami Dolphins in March 2015.

Suh has been renowned as a player of much controversy, despite his talent and superb ability, because he has been associated to an aggressive style of play. He was once suspended from a Detroit playoff game, but the sentence was later overturned after he won an appeal.
