The woman whose body was found in a ditch on August 19, 2022, has been named. Authorities say that Megan Rich’s ex-boyfriend, who was at the center of their investigation, was found dead from a gunshot wound that looked like it was done by himself. The body found at 11:45 a.m. on August 19 in the marshes near Cedar Point Drive and Clark Sound Bay was identified as that of 41-year-old Megan Rich by Charleston County Coroner Bobbi Jo O’Neal. Rich, who lives in Summerville, was last seen on August 12 in the area around James Island.
Brian Curtis Baker, Rich’s ex-boyfriend, was the main person Charleston police were looking into when the woman went missing. Authorities think that Baker killed himself less than six hours after the body parts were found in the swamps. At about 5:21 p.m., the body of the 59-year-old guy was found near Refuge Run on James Island. The doctor says it looks like he killed himself by shooting himself in the head.
Rich’s death is being looked into as a murder, but the doctor said he wouldn’t know the exact cause of death until an autopsy was done. The man and woman, who have a baby, had a “documented history of physical violence,” according to affidavits for an arrest warrant. They lived together at a house on James Island until May. Records show that in the same month, Baker filed a notice in magistrate court to have the woman kicked out of his house.
Around the same time, a neighbor named Taylor Corr said that Baker had a fight with Rich. Corr told The Post and Courier that Baker rang her doorbell late at night and asked her husband to call 911. Baker said that his girlfriend had shut the door on him and locked him out. Baker is said to have killed himself on August 19 before Charleston police could arrest him for the death of his ex-girlfriend.
Elisa Bluestein’s obituary and funeral arrangements will be released by the family at a later date.
