Mike Shannon was an American baseball player. He spent the outfielder who spent his entire Major League Baseball career playing for the St. Louis Cardinals. Shannon was born and raised in St. Louis and attended CBC High School before enrolling at the University of Missouri for a year before signed with the St. Louis Cardinals in 1958.
Shannon was born and raised in St. Louis. In 1962, he made his Major League debut, and the Cardinals were his team for the duration of his career. Shannon retired in 1970 after a nine-year career during which he won two World Series titles. In 1971, he started his broadcasting career on KMOX. Shannon was well-known for his eccentric speech patterns, or Shannonisms, throughout his 50-year broadcasting career. Many nights in the summer and fall, you could hear him urging a long fly ball to “get up baby, get up.”
During the great home run race between Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa in the summer of 1998, when McGwire shattered Roger Maris’ long-standing single-season home run mark, he was on the mike, there were World Series victories, pennant races, and pennant races.
Shannon said that a COVID-19 infection left him in a coma for “a long time, too long” in August 2021 and that he was still experiencing the effects of his near-death experience as a COVID long-hauler almost a year later. After a 50-year career, he would give up his role as the Cardinals’ announcer at the conclusion of the 2021 season.
