Dubuque Hempstead Class of 1973 released a statement regarding the passing of one of their classmate:

“It’s always hard when it comes time to share these posts. I’m sad to tell you that we lost another classmate yesterday. Mike Brotherton passed away just a few weeks shy of his 68th birthday. He battled cancer for over eight years. Mike was a retired Iowa City police officer and he coached local children in his favourite sport, swimming. He will be missed.”

Who was Mike Brotherton?

Mike Brotherton, a retired Iowa City police officer, had a deep connection with swimming throughout his life. It all began when he started taking swimming lessons as a young child, eventually progressing to join a competitive team and continuing to swim throughout his high school years. His fondness for the sport led him to the North Liberty Recreation Center, where his son received swim lessons. Enamoured by the facility and its program, Brotherton decided to become a lifeguard and instructor there.

Observing the significant number of middle school-aged children utilizing the pool, Brotherton recognized an opportunity to provide them with more swimming opportunities and impart proper technique in all four strokes. With his extensive knowledge gained from 38 years in law enforcement, he utilized his expertise to guide the children, not only in swimming skills but also in making responsible choices both in the clinic and in the real world.

The swim clinic’s objective extended beyond teaching swimmers the correct techniques—it aimed to cultivate a genuine love for the sport. Brotherton aspired to ignite excitement and involvement in competitive swimming among as many children as possible, recognizing the numerous benefits it brings to their lives.

The family will release an obituary and funeral arrangements for Mike Brotherton.
