Michael Roberts’ early life

Roberts was born in Aylesbury, UK, in 1947. His mother came from St. Lucia island in the West Indies. He attended the High Wycombe College of Art in England for his education, where he majored in graphic design and fashion design. Instead of pursuing a career as an art director at J. Walter Thompson, he went into freelance fashion illustration and now works for publications such as the Sunday Times, Nova, and British Vogue. His original goal was to work in the creative department at J. Walter Thompson.

Career

Roberts was a contributor to a variety of publications throughout his fifty-year career. Some of these publications include British Vogue, French Vogue, Vogue Hommes, Vogue Espana, GQ, Vanity Fair, Sunday Times, Independent, Interview, Harpers & Queen, and Esquire. After working as a fashion editor for the Sunday Times beginning in 1972, he went on to assume the same role at Tatler magazine beginning in 1981.

Tina Brown recruited him to work on the fashion pages of Vanity Fair in 1983; however, he stayed in Britain and accepted a position as the fashion director at Tatler the next year. (Tina also brought him in as fashion director at The New Yorker). Also, in the year 1986, he was given the position of Design Director at British Vogue.

In 2006, Roberts was rehired by Vanity Fair to serve as the magazine’s director of fashion and style. He was a writer, stylist, photographer, director, and editor in addition to being an artist. He was a sextuple danger. Known as the “enfant terrible” of the fashion industry, Andre Leon Tally is the British equivalent of America’s Andre Leon Tally.
