Michael Wood Death – Newberry SC Police Department Lieutenant Michael “Mike” Wood has sadly passed away. He died on Wednesday 26th July 2023 after a deadly accident involving a tractor-trailer. He was confirmed dead through a post made on Facebook by Summerville Police Department that says “SPD’s thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of Lt. Mike Wood of the Newberry Police Department and his fellowofficers”.
How did the accident happen?
The collision took place at approximately 5:40 p.m. on Wednesday, as reported by Corporal David Jones from the South Carolina Highway Patrol. The Newberry Police Department’s 2015 Ford Taurus was traveling south on SC-395, also known as Nance Street, while a 2022 Freightliner Tractor-Trailer was heading east on SC-34, or Dixie Drive. The intersection of these two roads became the site of the unfortunate incident. The impact of the crash caused severe injuries to the driver of the Newberry Police vehicle, who was promptly rushed to a nearby hospital.
Tragically, the officer succumbed to his injuries after a short while. The driver of the tractor-trailer also suffered injuries and was taken to the hospital for medical attention, as confirmed by Jones. In a separate statement, the City of Newberry disclosed that the officer who lost their life was responding to a call for service at the time of the accident.
Who was Michael Wood?
To investigate the circumstances surrounding the collision, the South Carolina Highway Patrol’s Multi-disciplinary Accident Investigation Team (MAIT) has taken charge of the case, aiming to shed light on the incident’s details and causes. Officer Wood was incredibly modest despite his many accomplishments and high profile. He understands that the purpose of law enforcement is not ego gratification but rather public service and the defense of the weak. His modesty even goes to his willingness to receive criticism and develop in light of it.
Officer Wood exudes all the traits of a strong leader. He inspires those around him through his deeds rather than his words, and as a result, they respect and trust him. Many in the law enforcement community have been motivated by his unyielding devotion to service, his steadfast honesty, and his unflinching compassion.
