Michael Blackwell Death – Michael Blackwell, Kaiapoi and Community stalwart has sadly passed away following long battle with illness. He died causing a massive shockwave among those who knew him and his loved ones. He was pronounced dead on Wednesday evening, May 17, 2023. Michael will be greaky missed by who had the chance of meeting him during the course of his life.
Waimakariri District Council announced the news through a Facebook publication on Friday, May 19, 2023. Michael made a huge contribution to Kaiapoi and the Waimakariri community. Especially through the iconic Blackwells Department Store, his role with Waimakariri Water Zone Committee, passion for the environment, and contribution to the community.

“Michael was instrumental in lobbying for Councils recent purchase of Lineside Road property that has significant potential to better the water quality of the Kaiapoi River. I personally received a call from Michael who was unwell in hospital…this didn’t deter him advocating strongly,” Mayor Dan Gordon said in a recent statement mourning Michael’s death.
“Waimakariri is a better place for Michael’s involvement. I have extended the Councils condolences to the Blackwell family.” Waimakariri District Council said that “the flag on Council buildings will be lowered to half-mast on the day of Michael’s memorial service as a mark of respect for him.” Tributes, condolence messages and prayers have poured in since the news of his death surfaced.
This is very sad to read. I’ve grown up going into Blackwells and Michael was always there, and knew who I was because of family connection. There will always be memories of him in our family, especially with their bra section of the shop being in my Dads workshop after the earthquakes!
