Memphis Tilth car accident – On Sunday night near Mill Branch Road and I-55, there was a single-car crash involving Mia Madison, the executive director of Memphis Tilth. The Memphis Tilth is a group that encourages urban gardening to improve social ties, the economy, and the environment.
Charles Belenky, a Memphis Tilth board member, and a representative for the Memphis Police Department informed the Commercial Appeal about Madison’s passing on Monday afternoon after he contacted the family. The single-car collision occurred at the intersection of Mill Branch Road and Interstate 55, and the driver was taken in serious condition to Regional One Hospital. Madison, the organization’s executive director for gardening, was in the backseat of the vehicle.
According to commercialappeal.com, he cause of the accident was not stated and the condition of the driver of the vehicle was not stated but but the driver whose identity was not revealed is still receiving treatment at the hospital he was transported to after the accident happened. Madison was pronounced dead at the scene.

In 2019, four years after Memphis Tilth was incorporated, Madison joined the organization. The company has launched a number of sustainability initiatives, including the Bring It Food Hub that transports and sells locally farmed produce to restaurants, caterers, nonprofit groups, congregations, and offers a subscription service for individual consumers. Through its Grow Local campaign, which promotes urban gardening and works to inform Memphis residents of the advantages of growing their own food, the group also maintains gardens all across the city.
Through its GrowMemphis program, Memphis Tilth expects to have a network of over 55 gardens spread across 15 different zip codes by the year 2022. Additionally, the group operates a seed library at the Benjamin L. Hooks Central Library where residents of Memphis can “check out” seeds without charge and then return saved seeds at the conclusion of harvest seasons.
Madison got a bachelor’s degree in urban geography from the University of Memphis in 2009. After which he bagged his master’s degree in applied anthropology with a concentration in urban affairs in 2012. Before joining Memphis Tilth, he held positions with the Community Foundation, the U.S. Census Bureau, and the City of Memphis as a geospatial planning analyst.
